Our studio

A person's hands covered in clay shape a pot on a pottery wheel.

Two potters, one kiln

Mugs started in 2019 in a shared studio in Leipzig. Today it is the two of us, a wheel each and a gas kiln that holds about sixty pieces.

We make mugs because they are the piece of pottery people actually use every day. A good mug has to feel right in the hand, keep coffee warm for the first few sips and survive the dishwasher for years.

Every batch starts with the same stoneware clay. We throw each mug on the wheel, trim the foot the next day, pull and attach the handle, and leave it to dry slowly for about a week.

Then come two firings: a bisque firing at 950 °C to harden the clay, and a glaze firing at 1260 °C that turns the glaze to glass. The kiln makes the last decisions, so no two pieces are quite the same.
